“It’s invasive! It’ll take over your garden! Just pull it all out”…yaaada yaaada yaaada…
These are the many things you’ll hear about this stunning morning glory also commonly referred to as bindweed. Yes, it clings onto anything and everything it comes in contact with. Yes, it can choke the plants and take up all the nutrients. If you spot a bindweed when its starting out, fix a stick near it and see how it trains itself on it. It will eventually die down with the first frost but its hardy and may survive the winter. In my experience, every time I tried pulling it apart, it competed with me; almost as if it were telling me: ‘Who do you think you are?’ So I listened to her and learnt to coexist. It comes up every spring, does its clinging, kissing, choking and what not and then goes to sleep in winters. I’ve made my peace with her and I encourage you to do the same. 🙂
